VoltSafe Winter, previously known as MagnoPlug first received media attention in 2013 when co-inventors Arash Janfada & William Topping spoke to reporters about the need for it during Canada’s cold winters. Since then, the team has grown significantly and the technology has overcome many regulatory challenges. VoltSafe Winter will be available in 2018.
voltsafe: interesting tidbits
While seemingly similar to Apple’s “Magsafe”, VoltSafe technology is different than the well-known computer chargers (Mac) in several ways: Magsafe is always live, but because it is low voltage, it isn’t dangerous to touch. In contrast, VoltSafe is always OFF until the sides are fully connected. Our patented technology acts like a ‘gate-keeper’ and never allows electricity to flow unless all contacts on the respective plugs are touching simultaneously. VoltSafe technology can be adapted to any voltage or amperage.
Standard power outlets worldwide are always live (electricity running to them) and have recessed metal to reduce (but not eliminate) the risk of electrocution to the user. They also pose other hazards such as fire and tripping
You could touch your tongue to one or all of the metal pads on the cord and nothing would happen. You could even pour water on it and nothing would happen
Lab 498 Products Inc. owns the patented VoltSafe technology. This technology can be developed for many different applications: home, marine, heavy duty, emergency service vehicles, electric vehicles, medical, movie production industry, and other custom solutions
It takes upwards of 35 pounds of pressure (in cold temperatures) to plug/unplug a regular extension cord; the VoltSafe Winter takes around 5 pounds as magnetic pressure doesn’t change with temperature
The VoltSafe Winter has been tested to -78 Degrees Celsius
The original VoltSafe Winter design raised over $25,000 through a KickStarter campaign. The Kickstarter campaign was called Magnoplug (before branding the company technology VoltSafe)
Arash Janfada grew up in Chilliwack and went to high school with Trevor Burgess, CEO of Lab 498 Products Inc. They’ve known each other for more than 20 years
