Arctic cold snap puts Vancouver tech start-up’s revolutionary product in high demand
Motorists now have a unique and effective way to plug-in and protect their cars
Vancouver, British Columbia, 15 December, 2016: With Western Canada set for a deep freeze until mid-January, tech engineers at Vancouver’s Lab 498 Products Inc. are one step closer to delivering the VoltSafe Winter to eager motorists struggling to deal with cold weather car issues. The revolutionary new power cord invention puts an end to the challenges associated with plugging-in (and remembering to unplug) vehicles in freezing temperatures.
The innovative VoltSafe product replaces the traditional method of plugging in a block heater: shoving a frozen three-pronged plug into an extension cord. Instead, the VoltSafe technology removes the prongs all together. Its surfaces automatically snap together using magnets (which turns on the electrical current) and come apart by pulling gently which stops the power flow, leaving the components completely safe to touch. This patented Canadian technology not only removes the cold-weather plug-in (and forgetting to unplug) issue, but it also eliminates the electrocution danger, which has been present in standard electrical plug designs for more than 70 years.
VoltSafe technology was invented by Arash Janfada (AJ), a Masters of Engineering student who had experienced incidents of car damage thanks to some harsh prairie winters. “After one too many wrecked block-heaters and damaged bumpers, as well as countless “drives of shame,” said AJ, referring to the embarrassment of dragging a cord behind his car after forgetting to unplug it. “I looked for something that would help me stop destroying my car and avoid embarrassment at the same time, but it didn’t exist,” he said. “One morning I woke up to a lucid dream and I had the solution for it.”
VoltSafe Winter represents the evolution of the electrical plug. Current plug/outlet technology and its safety standards haven’t really changed in over 70 years. VoltSafe technology will revolutionize this, making electrical outlets safe from electrocution risks, while providing consumers with complete control over everything they plug in using an app on their phone. The VoltSafe Winter recently had its first production run and is undergoing testing for safety certification. This is the last step before full production and before Canada’s latest tech innovation gets into consumers’ hands.
“The VoltSafe technology itself just keeps getting better and better as we continue building out its possibilities,” says Trevor Burgess, CEO of Lab 498 Products Inc.. “It hasn’t been an easy or quick process but when it comes to electrical safety, we’re not willing to take any short cuts.”
About Lab 498 Products
Lab 498's flagship (patented) VoltSafe technology is the evolution of electrical plugs/outlets worldwide. VoltSafe eliminates the dangers (electrocution, tripping) associated with the standard 3-pronged electrical plug by using magnetic actuation as a means to safely and conveniently control AC power flow. Current product pipeline includes household, commercial, marine, electric vehicle, and other additional product designs. Lab 498 is located in Gastown (87 Cordova St. E, Vancouver, BC) and was founded in 2015.
